Welcome

Welcome to the website of Dr. Muammer Koç at the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU), Richmond, Virginia.  This website summarizes the research projects and activities of graduate and undergraduate students involved with Dr. Koç’s research team at the MDM Lab.

Professor Koc’s research focuses on sustainability from two main perspectives: (1) sustainable energy generation devices by leveraging the multi-scale manufacturing technologies for cost-effective, efficient and robust realization of micro-channel arrays on large areas. He is particularly interested in fuel cell manufacturing research that incorporates design, materials, manufacturing, integrated predictive tools, and product validation under actual performance conditions; (2) lightweigting of vehicles and other consumer products by developing novel manufacturing processes that can enable fabrication of complex shapes and features using lightweight materials such as composites, aluminum, magnesium, ultra-high strength steels, etc.

Fuel cells are promising to be an enabling and clean conversion technology that bridges the sustainable energy sources (hydrogen) and consumers (cars, homes, electronic products, etc.).  Dr. Koc’s research addresses technical barriers to realize affordable fuel cells in our cars and daily life such as design, materials and manufacturing of bipolar and interconnect plates which constitute the largest volume, mass and significant cost of fuel cell.  His research activities have led to the development of alternative bipolar plate manufacturing methods, understanding the relation between bipolar plate quality, fuel cell perfomance and manufacturing process chain.

Please take a look around and feel free to contact Dr. Muammer Koç or any of the research team members with any comments or questions.
